T8280-347 - Abraham: The Old Testament Pattern of Saving Faith, Pt 2 (Romans 4:9–12) - Sun, 14 Mar 2010
How does a person get on the right side of God? How does a person escape divine judgment and enter into divine blessing? All religions offer some formula, some means supposedly to make that happen. And, of course, none of them can apart from the true gospel of Jesus Christ. Here we find that the only way that a person can be made right with God is apart from works, apart from anything that person does simply through faith, the gift of grace is given. When a person places genuine faith in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ, salvation, forgiveness and righteousness comes as a gift. http://www.gty.org
T8280-346b - Abraham: The Old Testament Pattern of Saving Faith, Pt 1b (Romans 4:1–8) - Sun, 07 Mar 2010
Do you realize that every false religious system ever created has been rooted in a works-based righteousness? In every worldly religion, it is the individual who is responsible for purchasing his or her own redemption, through good works or sacrifices. But true, biblical salvation is only possible when God intervenes and grants us His grace and forgiveness. On our own, we’re incapable of saving ourselves. Looking all the way back to the life of Abraham, the Apostle Paul explained in the book of Romans, how God’s redemptive plan has always focused on faith and grace, not good works or sacrifices. Let’s rejoin Pastor John MacArthur now in Romans chapter four, and see what else Paul had to say about the Old Testament Pattern of Saving Faith.

There was a little girl who secretly and quietly had saved up enough money to buy her father a present for Father's Day. But when she had all her money collected, she was very concerned and so she went to her mother and said, “I can't be going down town every month to make payments. Mother, is there a store where they let you pay for the whole thing at once?" That's the kind of question a child would ask. And it is also true that there are religions in the world, in fact all false religions believe that you buy your salvation on some kind of an installment plan. You pay a little bit as you go. Good works offered to God each month, each week, each day, but nothing could be further from the truth. Salvation doesn't come on the installment plan. The price was fully paid at once by Christ and the gift of salvation is given at once by Christ to the penitent and believing sinner.
